5th Day in Rome

Tour Rome in 2-5 Days

Unfortunately for some of you this marks your last day in the Eternal City. Many of you have probably covered all the sites I have listed and added some new ones to your itinerary.  Others may have only done half. Whichever amount you have accomplished, you should have had fun, learnt something new and most of all created some of the best memories of your life.

For the 5th day I highly recommend revisiting some of your favourite places- you certainly can never have enough photos, strolling through the city or shopping for unique souvenirs. By now some of you have probably raised your eyebrows, adamantly insisting on other places to visit.
We're here to please.

San Giovanni in Laterano

San Giovanni in Laterano - St. John in Lateran is the oldest and highest ranking of the four papal basilicas. It is located as you may have guessed in the neighbourhood of San Giovanni easily reached by following these directions. It holds the title of mother church to all Catholics in the world and is made up of The Lateran Palace and adjacent basilica. The Lateran Palace is found towards the rare left side of the basilica. Why is it worth seeing? Because of its astounding artistic heritage and grandeur. Its late Baroque facade though imposing, is in clear juxtaposition to the clean minimalist entry way. Inside, the sheer size of the basilica becomes more apparent as exquisite sculptures and frescoes transport you into another world.

The Catacombs

There are 2 main catacombs in Rome, but of the two - San Sebastiano and San Callisto, we prefer San Callisto. San Callisto being the larger and more prestigious of the two.  Located underground on the ancient Appian road, the catacombs developed during the middle of the second century and hold the tombs of martyrs, popes and Christians. It is a revered and somber place and gives you a glimpse not only into burial rituals for Christians during that age but also everyday religious practices. It is in the same zone as San Giovanni and can be easily reached. The duration of the tour is about 30-40 minutes which gives you enough time to get back into the city center for lunch for those starting in the morning.

Palazzo degli Esposizioni

If time is still on your side this exhibition hall is a wonderful way to soak up your remaining hours in Rome. It is made of three floors, the ground floor being the main exhibition space. This museum has hosted major exhibits including those of Bulgari, Calder and National Geographic. There is an ultra chic modern bar and restaurant on the top floor, serving the best in nouvelle cuisine and sassy cocktails. Check the exhibitions section to see what is being displayed when you're in Rome.

The Quirinal Palace

The Quirinal Palace if you have time is a wonderful last minute photo opportunity. Follow these directions and you arrive at the official residence of the President of the Repubblic of Italy. The visiting hours do not leave much window of opportunity only Sundays 8:30 - 12, but the view from the courtyard is worth the trip. On the horizon St. Peter's juts out from amongst the tangled maze of domes and spires, as a symbol of the unfailing strength of a city which was born from an empire and continues today.
