Gelato in Rome, Italy
One discussion which remains a continual bone of contention in Rome is who holds the title for best gelato. Locals defend their hot-spots fiercely while unsuspecting tourists are sometimes left with a poor version of true Italian gelato. Gelato and ice cream are different. Gelato has no air incorporated albeit that from the churning process and has more egg yolks and less fat. One of the best places for gelato in Rome in our opinion is Giolitti.
Yes, we know its located in an area frequented by tourists but locals themselves agree that the consistency and lack of artificial flavorings continue to make this high on the list of contenders for the title. This is gelato heaven with traditional flavors such as rich dark chocolate side by side to contemporary ones like beer. Cones come in a variety of sizes at a low cost and the portions are quite large. In fact we avoid ordering more than two scoops for fear of it falling off. It is also possible to order a cup which is a little cardboard container in a variety of sizes and prices. They will always almost ask you if you want 'panna' which is the Italian version of unsweetened whip cream. Its more a texture thing rather than flavor and the majority of our staff indulge in it. For those of you not quick enough on the cone, Giolitti has the most amazing gelato combinations in glass cups you have ever seen. With products like the Olympic cup which is a towering mound of zabaione, turrone and chocolate ice cream sitting on top of a base of pan di Spagna soaked in the flavor of Alkermes you can over-indulge your love of artiginal Italian gelato. We put on 5 pounds just typing it alone. Cones aren't allowed at the tables but there is also an assortment of light alcoholic beverages, fruit shakes and pastries which can be eaten there. Its proximity to the Pantheon makes it the perfect before or after treat.
