Events in Rome, Italy
Easter known as “La Pasqua” to Italians, is probably one of the best times to plan your trip to Rome. It is at this time that the rainy, cold weather of the Roman winter, gives way to the warmer, sunnier days of spring.
There is an air of expectancy and hope throughout Rome, with Romans themselves smiling just a bit more than usual, as they begin to shed their heavy overcoats and jackets in favour of the lighter clothing that heralds spring.
Of course with the Vatican nestled in the confines of the Eternal City, there are many must see and do activities during this most sacred of Christian festivals. We highly recommend that you plan your trip to include the week before Easter-Holy week- as there are a wealth of traditions and particular customs that will richly enrich your stay here:
Palm Sunday in St. Peter's Square is a must see event as the Pope himself will preside over the blessing of the palms and the Holy procession and mass.
(28th March 9:30am St. Peter's Square).
Good Friday is one of the most important days in the Christian calendar around the world and involves the reenactment of the Stations of the Cross. The Pope himself will preside over the most celebrated of these at the Colosseum. Before that will be mass at 17:00 at the Vatican Basilica.
(2nd April 5:00pm Vatican Basilica; 9:15pm Vatican Basilica – Mass)
Easter Sunday marks the conclusion of the entire season of Lent with the famous mass in St.Peter's Square of course presided over by the Pope.
(4th April 10:15am St. Peter's Square).
Besides the religious activities, there are of course the world famous monuments around Rome to visit. We advise you check the opening hours during this time as they may be different from the normal ones. Easter Monday – Pasquetta – is a national holiday in Italy and many parks are filled with families and friends and of course picnic baskets. Take a delightful walk in the beautiful Villa Borghese Park and Gallery. Remember to take your picnic basket and blanket and forever enjoy the moment in the Eternal City.
