Events in Rome, Italy
Though an event not held in Rome, the Cortina Winter Polo Tournament remains one of the most prestigious events in all of Italy. For one week in the month of February, the very best in the world of competitive polo descend upon the small, luxury town of Cortina d'Ampezzo.
The magnificent and prized scenery of the Dolomites, with ferocious red sunsets, pure white mountain caps and enchanting valleys, plays backdrop to the fierce competition which takes place on lake Misurina.
At 1800 metres above sea level, this lake becomes a virginal ice canvas each day, as both men and horses alike, battle each other for top honors in this event sponsored by luxury car manufacturer Audi. Of course because Cortina is a luxury resort town, the events surrounding this highly respected competition are of a world class standard. The Polo Restaurant with views of the lake, promotes and enhances the social aspect of the week long festivities, serving Italian delicacies and Ampezzano specialties.
At the end of the week's intense activities, it was the Hotel de la Poste Polo Team which had narrowly snatched victory from the saddle of the Audi Polo team by just half of a point. Going into the final, the Audi team were favoured to be this year's winners. However the Hotel de la Poste team determined to break their losing spell of four years (last victory having been in 2006), pushed themselves and horses to very limit. At one point it seemed as if the pressure of the competition had gotten the better of Christian Bernal (Hotel de la Poste), who missed two prime opportunities to score from 30 yards. These glitches were still not enough for the Audi team to position themselves for a decisive victory and Hotel de la Poste on a half point advantage took home the spoils of this years Cortina Winter Polo Gold Cup.
