Gelato in Rome, Italy
One lovely spring afternoon the senior editor and I decided to take a breezy little trip on the scooter, to discover any new places which might be hiding along the cobbled stone streets of Rome. We discovered a charming gelateria with gelato so good it rivals our favorites in Rome.
Gelateria Icecream Bears located a few steps from the Colosseum, whips up some of the creamiest and smoothest gelato we have ever tried. All the gelato is hand made fresh each day and though the variety of flavors might not be as many as in a commercial store, the ones they have, have the highest quality fruits, chocolates and nuts you could ask for. We decided to be adventurous and have our flavors on cones (we're not very good at licking quickly), taking cones for €2 and €2.50 respectively.
The pistacchio is actually the best we've tried in Rome and you can taste the flavor of the nut coming through, the coconut was fantastic, light in flavor with grated pieces of the coconut in every lick. A flavor for chocoholics to try is the Dark Rhum, which is a combination of dark decadent chocolate mixed with rum, giving an exotic and memorable flavor.
There are other interesting flavors such as their own Hungry Bear and Orso Bianco, and the shop also sells delicious Sicilian pastries and hot 'cornetti' after midnight. The shop is closed on Tuesdays but every other day including Sunday it is open.
