Restaurants in Rome, Italy
Hamasei Restaurant is for us the best Japanese restaurant in Rome. Rome does not have a large number of international restaurants like London or New York, because of course Italians prefer Italian cuisine and why wouldn't they? Hamasei is the quintessential Japanese restaurant with minimal classic furnishings, an attention to dark polished woods and light, ethereal colors. The restaurant is deceptively large, but strategically placed partitions manage to separate diners into intimate sections each with their dedicated waiters or waitresses.
For those of you who have a weakness for sushi but more importantly sashimi, Hamasei does not disappoint. The sashimi which usually includes salmon, sweet shrimp and tuna is so fresh and delicate that the majority of us decline using wasabi. There is not the slightest hint of strong fish odors and the harmonious balance of fragile textures and mild flavors delights the palate of sashimi aficionados. There is a delightful plate of the best of their sashimi offerings for only 18 Euro or you can order separate pieces as appetizers.
The creative world of sushi unfolds before your very eyes with expertly crafted rolls with delectable pieces of tuna and salmon inside. The nigiri is past mouth watering, delighting also the eyes with the vibrant colors of the fish of the Mediterranean. Our top pick in the sushi category for two diners is the sushi plate for 40 Euro which features all the major elements of sushi but with some selections of sashimi.
There is a modern sushi bar located at the front of the restaurant for those who would prefer to see their food being prepared directly in front of them. Many Japanese tourists frequent this section, carefully selecting from amongst the array of plates.
Don't worry non-sushi lovers there are more than enough dishes to also satisfy your cravings of fish and also meat. We've also tried these selections and can guarantee you won't be disappointed. There is a choice of succulent prawns and other fish, lightly grilled for appetizers. There is also a wide variety of fish and meats prepared in healthy and delicious ways, along with traditional soups, fried rice, steamed vegetables and other gastronomical delights.
The service is excellent, probably better than that in many Italian restaurants. What we love the most are the prices. A dinner for two people can be 70 Euro including a bottle of wine, while at the sushi bar you can customize your menu to suit your budget. Reservations we definitely recommend for any day of the week. There is no website therefore you must call directly to reserve your table.
