Rome Typical Food
If you know just a bit about Italian culture you would have heard the word 'aperitivo' some time or another. An aperitivo in its simplest sense, is a pre-dinner drink which is supposed to open the appetite, and prepare the palate for main meal to come.
In Rome, an aperitivo is always accompanied by finger foods or small hors d'oeurves, but in recent times a full buffet spread consisting of pastas, meats and cheese has become extremely popular.
So much so, that there are bars which have become famous just based on the food they offer during aperitivo. Aperitivo should not be confused with happy hour and the concept of discounted drinks at a set time is a new and hardly employed concept in traditional bars in Rome.
When someone says to you 'prendiamo/facciamo un aperitivo' meaning 'let's have an aperitivo' this is what they mean:
- Choose a bar between 6:30 - 9pm and order a drink usually lightly alcoholic (no whiskey, cognac, limoncello or grappa) or non-alcoholic.
- For the price of one drink you are entitled to olives, chips and nuts (not good value for money) or access to a full buffet consisting of pastas, cous cous, cold meats, sandwiches and other treats. (really good value for money)
- If you choose to order a second drink, the price is not discounted.
An aperitivo is the perfect way to begin winding down your day, after seeing the sights and attractions in Rome. It can be a cheap alternative to dinner, for those on a tight budget and choosing a bar in a historic piazza can allow you to enjoy the beauty of the Roman evening in excellent company.
