National Gallery of Modern Art

Cultural Events in Rome, Italy

National Gallery of Modern Art

The National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, is by far one of our favorite museums to visit in Rome. This museum located behind Ville Borghese, would not make the 'things to see' list if it was our first time to Rome and we had limited time. However if its your third or fourth visit, its a definite must see.

The museum is promoted as having two different spirits, one with a strong bond to the past, promoting the art of the then newly formed Italian state and a second spirit with the mission of displaying 'living art' from 1883 and beyond. From an aesthetic point of view, the high ceilings and large open spaces found inside, make it a true pleasure to wander from room to room without having to jostle for personal space as we have found in other museums. The rooms with fixed exhibitions display periods from early 19th century including works by Palagi, Koch and Franci while the 20th century period displays pieces by Balla, de Chirico and Gattuso. For lovers of the futurism movement like we are, this is the museum in Rome which holds the largest collections of works from this period. The museum frequently has new exhibitions on display, and continually enhances the viewing experience with modern interactive sculptures.
