Ostia Antica

Tour Rome in 1 Week

The ruins of Ostia Antica are worth visiting more so during the summer months. Rain and ruins aren't usually a good and the sometimes inefficient transport system can create unnecessary headaches especially for those travelling with small children. Ostia Antica is sometimes overshadowed by the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum found in nearby Naples as these two remain the most famous of the three. Ostia Antica was a bustling vibrant port city in the time of the Roman Empire and its ruins are some of the best preserved in Italy. The architecture of 4th century BC through to 849 AD has been lovingly excavated and conserved allowing you to enter a three dimensional museum. Most notable buildings are the insulae which are apartment buildings housing the lower and middle class of the city, the theatre and public baths.
