Palatium Wine Bar

Enoteca in Rome, Italy

Palatium Wine Bar

Palatium Wine BarWine bars in Italian are known as 'enoteche' and offer the opportunity to locals and tourists alike to sample a wide variety of wines at reasonable prices and possibly buying them.  The Palatium Enoteca owned by the region of Lazio, gives tourists the chance to taste wines specifically made in the region, like the fresh and fruity Frascati along with other Italian favourites.  As a double treat the wine bar serves the best cuisine from the region delighting you with flavours from Rome, Viterbo, Frosinone and other cities.

With 340 traditional products you can entertain your tastebuds with an exquisite range of cheeses, cured meats, legumes and honey. Dishes like the Roman specialty of 'amatriciana' or ' la carbonara' dominate the palate sensitive menu, showing how all the local ingredients fuse together to create memorable and rich flavours.

We recently visited on a balmy Saturday afternoon, after discovering that telephone reservations are not taken. Luckily we arrived at 12:30 pm and were able to find a table for two. The restaurant with its modern design and simple furnishings, has a central bar for those who prefer to sample just the wines, a small alcove for those waiting and numerous tables both on the ground and first floors.

The food is beyond a doubt delicious, with generous portions even for the appetizers. One of our favorites was 'la tiella di polipo', an appetizer of bite- sized pieces of octopus, baked in a crumbly pastry with the world famous olives from the province of Gaeta. The lasagna as a first course, is an excellent choice for those who want to know the real difference between Italian lasagna and that made in the other parts of the world.

The wine list was extremely long, offering a wide selection of the best wines only from the region of Lazio. We settled on a simple Frascati which complimented the subtle undertones of the fish appetizers. The service is extremely quick and professional, with some of the waiters speaking English. Unfortunately, none of the menus are in English, and we noted that one American couple had a bit of trouble finding out if their choice was a meat or fish dish.

However, because we want all of you to try this restaurant, we will try to put up a copy of the menu in English here for you. If you have babies or small children in strollers, this would not be an ideal location to have lunch or dinner, as the space inside Palatium is a bit too small to navigate with these items. The Palatium gives you good value for money and we are definitely interested in discovering how many of you have tried this locale.
