Pastry Shops in Rome, Italy
Moriondo & Gariglio is a historic chocolate shop located in the heart of Rome. If you didn't know about the place it would be like trying to find a needle in a hay stack, as it sits in one of the less traversed streets in Rome. We discovered it after hearing one of our Roman friends raving about the quality of chocolates there, and so we set off one afternoon to see what the fuss was all about.
The sweet almost hypnotic scent of chocolate wafts through the air as soon as you open the door, and the red colored walls and deep oak furniture reminded us of a 18th century European salon.
The charming lady at the counter who we soon discovered was the owner, proceeded to walk us through all the various types of chocolates on display that day. The chocolate has no additives and only the highest quality fruits, nuts and creams are used in recipes dating back to the 1800's when the master chocolatier set up shop in Turin.
The chocolates come in flavors such as raspberry, mint, pecan, orange, caramel, rum and many other types. If you're like us and can't decide without tasting first, the owner is only too happy to allow you sample her favorite picks and the ones you request. Prices are ridiculously low for these high quality chocolates, with a medium sized box with flavors you request around €16. These chocolates would make the perfect gifts for friends who want less commercial souvenirs from Rome.
