Pizza in Rome, Italy
Gusto Pizzeria pays homage to the Italian classic: Neapolitan pizza. This loft style restaurant with its exposed brick work, deep wooden floors and well worn furniture is such a favorite with the Romans, that a fidgety queue of locals usually forms outside.
The simple interior design, accented by modern lighting and neutral toned woods, can accommodate a healthy number of patrons. The prime seating however, is that outside under the shaded portico, a stone's throw away from the Ara Pacis.
The traditional wooden oven in the restaurant, gives the pizza the characteristic flavor of that from Naples and can be enjoyed with a variety of traditional toppings. Our favorite is the deceptively simple 'margherita pizza', which features a base of savory tomato paste, slices of fresh mozzarella 'di bufala' and three or four leaves of basil. The pizza is baked to perfection resulting in a high but extremely light crust. There is also an assortment of tasty hot appetizers from the region of Naples, as well as cold dishes and salads. The seafood salad with fresh octopus, squid, and prawns is a perfect light lunch on a hot summer day.
The prices are reasonable for the portions you receive, though service can be a bit slow at times. Gusto is also a wonderful casual dining experience after a day of seeing the sites and it is easily reachable from all the major tourist attractions. I would highly recommend reservations, unless you will most likely have to queue up for a bit. The website at this present time is available only in Italian, but the courteous staff speak English.
