What types of tickets are available?
€1
B.I.T valid for 75 minutes from first stamp. Allows you to travel once on the underground and unlimited times on buses and trams during a 75 minute period. Tickets must be stamped before using the trains of the underground and must be stamped again when using the buses or trams. In cases where you must change buses or trams, there is no need to stamp the ticket a second time after it has been stamped at the beginning of your journey.

€4 B.I.G valid until midnight of the day it has been stamped. Allows you unlimited travel on the underground, trams and buses and must be stamped only once at the beginning of your travels.

€11 B.T.I valid for 3 consecutive days. Allows you unlimited travel on the underground, trams and buses and must be stamped only once at the beginning of your travels.

€16 C.I.S valid for 7 consecutive days. Allows you unlimited travel on the underground, trams and buses and must be stamped only once at the beginning of your travels. The ticket holder's name must be written on the ticket for it to be considered valid.

€25 Roma Pass is a tourist kit which allows you to stretch your money:
Free entry to the first 2 visited museums and / or archaeological sites of your choice
Reduced ticket prices to all other museums and / or archaeological sites visited thereafter
Free use of the city's public transport network (urban buses and trains, Underground lines A and B, Met.Ro trains: Roma - Lido, Roma - Viterbo for the Roma - Sacrofano section, Roma Pantano railways lines within the urban territory of the City of Rome) Trenitalia trains and Cotral buses are not included.
Discounted tickets to exhibitions, events and other collaborating operators and businesses.
Reduced charges for use of the On-call Multi-lingual Medical Service for Tourists (MET Travel Health)
Tourist cultural service Roma Informa.
At the Colosseum a reserved turnstile is available for Roma Pass holders to get direct access to the monument.
We highly recommend using the Roma Pass for anyone staying longer than a day, as the individual prices of monuments and museums plus public transportation does begin to add up.

Where can I buy tickets?
All stations of the underground have ticket machines where you can buy B.I.T, B.I.G and B.T.I tickets. You can choose your language of instruction and easily and safely purchase your tickets.
The underground stations of Battistini, Cornelia, Ottaviano, Lepanto, Spagna, Termini, Anagnina (Line A) and Rebbibia, Ponte Mammolo, Eur Fermi, Laurentina (Line B) all have manned ticket counters which sell all the types of tickets available. Counters open Mon - Sat / 7am - 8pm; Sundays and holidays/ 8am - 8pm.
Tabacchi which are shops clearly marked throughout the city with a huge T. You can buy B.I.T, B.I.G and B.T.I tickets here. Please be aware that these close at around 1pm and reopen at around 4pm.
A few buses and trams have machines where you can purchase your ticket. We do not recommend depending on this method to purchase your ticket because the bus or tram you take, unfortunately may not have one of these machines and you run the risk that you are caught without a ticket. Not a pleasant way to remember Rome.

Types of Payment
To buy your tickets from the ticket machines you need to use cash (in Euro)  and machines accept all coins except €0.05, €0.02 and €0.01. Machines can give only up to €10 euro in change.
At the manned ticket counters you can use both cash and credit cards (Visa, Maestro, Master Card).
To buy your tickets from Tabacchi we advise you to use cash.

What if I don't have a ticket?
Being caught on public transportation without a ticket, an expired or unstamped one, brings a fine of €50 euro if paid on the spot to the ticket controllers.
Excuses like '... really, I needed a ticket?' or '...the tabacchi/ticket counters were closed' will not generate any sympathy, likewise pretending not to understand English (yes, they can speak in English).
If the machine to stamp your ticket on the buses or trams is not working, simply write the time you entered the bus or tram in the space provided. There are usually two or more machines available on the buses and trams so you will have to make sure that all are not working before you do this.
Just avoid the harassment and hassle and plan in advance.

Avoiding Scams and Rip-Offs
Rome unfortunately is filled with opportunistic pirahnas waiting to take advantage of you and your wallet. To avoid getting ripped off or scammed:
Never buy tickets from any one selling on the street, especially those claiming to work on behalf of the transport company. We have explained where you can buy your tickets easily.
Avoid accepting help from anyone who proposes to help you use the ticket machine unless they are wearing the official vest of the transport company (ATAC, TRENITALIA).
Wait for both your ticket and change before you leave the ticket machine.
